FEV
FEV is a worldwide recognized leader in the design of internal combustion engines and a leading provider of advanced testing, instrumentation products and services to some of the world’s largest powertrain manufacturers.
FEV Virtual Engine complements the engine development process by incorporating virtual prototyping methods during development phases and connecting proprietary development techniques with general purpose CAE tools such as Adams.
During the powertrain development stage, FEV Virtual Engine allows users to easily improve individual components, subsystems and even complete engines. This can be achieved by applying specific knowledge of a leading company in the development of powertrains in Adams’ robust simulation environment. The result is an interface and architecture that meets the requirements for engineering applied to powertrains.
The main function of FEV Virtual Engine is to support all phases of the development cycle, from preliminary simulations for conceptual analysis to advanced simulations for design verification. The whole process is covered by a single tool. FEV Virtual Engine uses a closed loop approach allowing data and models to be reprocessed to an appropriate level of tuning.
Continuous support is provided by the tool for development process with step-by-step tuning of the initial concept, whatever the level of precision needed for the development stage of the powertrain. To accomplish this level of support, FEV Virtual Engine has a library of specific engine elements, which includes the best development practices.
The simulation environment enables engineering teams to predict, refine, and enhance the dynamic performance of powertrains and their subsystems for vehicle enhancement or other engineering applications. Users can also combine proprietary designs of individual components or subsystems for a complete dynamic simulation, enabling troubleshooting of structural loads, lifetime, durability, vibration and powertrain performance under cost, weight and accommodation constraints.
FEV Virtual Engine is user-oriented. The features and interface of the tool are made to meet the engineering needs of the development of powertrain systems. Users quickly become productive even with little training. Specialized solutions are also offered for simulations a typical powertrain development cycle, such as crankshafts, valves and pistons controls and other engine components.
FEV Virtual Engine is developed on Adams platform. The Adams solver is widely used for advanced simulations of the dynamics of mechanical systems and recognized as the world standard for simulation of virtual systems and prototyping in the automotive industry.
The development of the FEV Virtual Engine came from the challenge faced by the leaders of the automotive industry to meet specific requirements for the new generation of powertrain simulation software. In 1998, a consortium was founded between European OEMs, auto parts suppliers and engineers, so MSC and FEV combined their efforts to develope the Adams/Engine. In 2008 this partnership reached a new level with the launch of FEV Virtual Engine Powered by Adams.
Today, FEV holds the responsibility for the development, improvement and support of this product. The partnership with MSC combined MSC Software’s multicore simulation technology with the pioneering knowledge of engine development to launch the premier powertrain simulation tool.
